Introduction
I've never been good at introductions.
None the less, I feel I should explain the reason for this blog and its purpose.
This blog will concentrate on 19th century warfare and the wargaming of that period.
I have chosen to concentrate on the first half of the nineteenth century, though I will certainly foray into later and earlier wars such as the American War of Independence or the Sudan.
The period starting after the Napoleonic wars and ending with the Crimea has, in my opinion, been left aside by the wargaming community. Yet it is the time of the Risorgiomento, of the Carlist wars, of the Revolutions through out Europe and many other epics.
Recently quite a few manufacturers have started ranges set in the 1830's-40's or have miniatures that can easily be converted to suite this period. The new Blackpowder rules from Warlord games only make wargaming in the opening years of the nineteenth century more attractive.
As a History student I am also interested in a more factual approache to these various events and epics and I shall try to provide some background for each area, especially less well known ones such as the Carlist Wars.
Finally, just to comment on the above illustration, which represents a barricade during the 1848 revolutions in Germany. It's a piece of European history that I really like partly because there were many ambitions for a new Europe but also because of its complexity and the rivalry between the aforementioned ideals. Hopefully we will see much more of this period as I hope to be able to translate it into wargaming.
